Regulated sports betting may be coming to a town near you…maybe
On November 14, 2014, NBA commissioner Adam Silver wrote an opinion editorial for the New York Times giving his opinion on regulated sports betting – he is in favor of it. Silver believes that sports betting needs to be brought out of the underground, brought mainstream and regulated.
“I believe that sports betting should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated” – Adam Silver
Silver says keeping sports betting illegal simply encourages illegal activity. It is also estimated that over 4 Billion are wagered on illegal sports betting in the U.S. per year.
Silver believes widespread, legalized sports betting will be beneficial.
Sports betting actually could come to fruition in the not so distant future. Next week a federal judge will be expected to rule on the highly publicized efforts in New Jersey that area allowing sports betting in casinos and race tracks.
